Very Good News, Concrete Hermit to open another shop!

Hide Your Arms - 8 hours 25 min ago

I really like Concrete Hermit, they’re the kind of people I’m glad to have in Britain bridging the scene between art and t-shirts, and the last couple of times I’ve been to London I’ve always tried to visit their shop/gallery off Brick Lane, but it’s a bit out of the way for a tourist like me, so them opening a new store just off one of the most famous shopping streets in the world is a pretty exciting development. The new shop is going to be in Kingly Court, which is like a mini-shopping centre for cool brands (and bars/restaurants/clubs) that aren’t quite big enough to be on Carnaby Street, but definitely deserve a share of the spotlight, and I’m sure that Concrete Hermit will fit right in. There’s no official date fore the opening, though it is promised to be ‘very soon’, so naturally I’ll let you know when the doors swing open.

Preshrunk is for sale, someone should buy it

Hide Your Arms - 12 hours 25 min ago

I got word from Jason earlier this morning that he’s looking to sell Preshrunk. If you’re wondering what Preshrunk is/was, then clearly you weren’t looking at t-shirt blogs back in the day, and by back in the day I mean ‘05/’06 because that is a long time ago in terms of the internet. Back when I was just starting out blogging about hoodies (with the occasional t-shirt, oh how things have changed), Jason was #1, and with good reason. He had good connections (he could follow the blog>get mentioned on Boing Boing>profit business model), he blogged regularly, he knows almost everything about the internet, and he was honest. I feel that there isn’t enough honesty in the tee blogging world, we’re all here to be friendly and write about shirts we like, but no one likes everything and I feel ‘we’ should be more vocal about the stuff we don’t like (including me, even if it gets bad reactions). I guess you could say Jason inspired me in that way, I took a lot of cues from what he was doing when I was starting out as a blogger.

However, loving t-shirts, and having time to write about them are very different things, and Mr. Cosper simply doesn’t have the time as far as I can tell, over the past couple of years Preshrunk has been very stop-start, with “hey, I’m back, for real this time…” posts every few months which were followed by a flurry of new posts, and then silence once more, it was a little sad really, which is why I think Jason is making the right decision by putting the site up for sale (a decision that’s probably influenced by his upcoming wedding). Currently there’s no set sale price, because how do you really value a blog? If you feel you can answer that question, and want to take on Preshrunk, drop Jason a tweet @boogah

Robocop Crossing the Alps on a Unicorn from Olly Moss and Go Ape Shirts

Troundup - Wed, 09/08/2010 - 02:10

Go Ape Shirts have just released their newest shirt, designed by the well known artist Olly Moss. I can’t really think of a word or a phrase that could accurately encapsulate everything about this shirt. So…just take it at face value–it’s Robocop…crossing the alps…on a unicorn, and I dig it.

You can pick it up for $20.00 at Go Ape Shirts. It’s printed on American Apparel.

Go Ape Shirts have also reprinted Hip Hop Hibernation, which remains one of my favorite shirt designs. It’s in the original moss color, as well as an all new silver edition.

Jimmy Heartcore is closing his shop, take advantage of him ($7 tees!)

Hide Your Arms - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 23:00

Jimmy doesn’t print shirts any more (though IIRC he’s a demon when it comes to posters and canvas prints) and he hasn’t released any new shirts for a couple of years, and he’s decided it’s finally time to close up shop and move on, but not before getting rid of the old stock first. Sizes and designs are very much a mixed bag, but it’s very much worth rummaging around to get your hands on a $7 tee from Heartcore Clothing. Presumably this clearance sale will be ongoing until Jimmy runs out of tees to sell.

Sale on at Alive & Well (if you’re small or medium)

Hide Your Arms - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 18:59

I promise I’ll stop talking about sales soon, but it’s so hard not to post them when bargains are to be had!

Alive & Well must be trying to clear out some of their old (though still mighty fine) designs because they’ve got a handful of shirts on sale, such as this one modeled by Hottie Von NoPants, but they’re only available in sizes small or medium, so sorry my bigger brothers, you won’t be getting in on the action, at least you can enjoy the Threadless sale.

25% off at Vapour Clothing

Hide Your Arms - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 15:00

Not sure how long this sale will be going on, but Vapour Clothing currently have 25% off their t-shirts, and whilst I’ve been following them on Twitter for ages, I hadn’t actually checked out their shirts, which was a bit silly because they’re actually really cool, saving or no saving. Still, I’m happier to have found them at £17.24 each rather than £22.99 for a tee! No need for a coupon code, discount already applied.

Huge sale at Threadless, t-shirts, $9 for the next 31 hours!

Hide Your Arms - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 11:00

Why 31 hours? I have no idea, but you shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth, and should probably get yuorself over to Threadless and make a purchase before their servers melt under the weight of orders, because even though they’ve been generous with the saving recently (the $10 sale wasn’t that long ago) I’m sure a lot of people won’t be able to resist the temptation of $9 Threadless t-shirts (and $9 onesies, kids tees, infant, tees, hoodsies, and $30 hoodies).

To be perfectly clear, this is when the sale is starting (right damn now) and ending: “Tuesday, 9/7 at 10am CST through Wednesday, 9/8 at 5pm CST”

Go, go, go!

Two new releases at Crazy Go Lucky

Hide Your Arms - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 07:00

Turns out Crazy Go Lucky turned 4 over the weekend, I had no idea they’d been going that long, congratulations!

In celebration, they released a couple of shirts that are both in pretty bold colourways, but no so bold that they’re offensively colourful which keeps them nice and wearable. They also have an amazing sticker on sale.

Signalnoise Tees

Buy Tees - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 05:54

Canadian designer James White had an epiphany this summer, he quit his day job so he could focus on more personal projects, which considering the results, might have been a loss for his boss but it was a great gain for t-shirt fans everywhere! Known by the pseudonym Signalnoise James has launched his own collection of T-shirts. All of the following piping hot t-shirts available at Signalnoise are priced at $27 each, and yes, they do rock – come and feel the noise…

See them all and more at signalnoise.bigcartel.com and check out his blog too at signalnoise.com.

Here’s a little more background info on the designer:

‘James White has been drawing since the age of 4, scribbling down his favorite characters such as Superman, Batman, the Dukes of Hazzard, etc. Being from a military family, he made 3 big moves through childhood but never strayed from his coloured-pencils. After going through school constantly being yelled at for drawing in class (by teachers, not parents) he applied and was accepted in 1995 to the Graphic Design course at a community college in Truro, Nova Scotia.

Graduating with honors he proceeded schooling by taking Interactive Technology. Upon graduation in 1998 he landed a job immediately in the website/graphic design field, all the while keeping up on his traditional drawing, painting and digital creation. James allowed both sides of corporate design and personal art to feed each other, and on his own time he has created logos, flyers, posters, CD covers and websites for various local music and entertainment companies. Today, James works on personal posters and art prints while still working fulltime in the graphic design industry for a company called Raised in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

His influences include: Dave McKean, Joshua Davis, Sheppard Fairey, Bill Watterson, Mark Rothko, Ian Miller, Scott Hansen, Georges Braque, Piet Mondrian.’

Here’s a rather cool t-shirt at SuperFancy, the über cool Danish streetwear label, if you don’t think they’re that cool then check out their latest “exhibition” at The Laundromat Café. If your life is one hectic rush you might want one of their “Sorry I’m Late” tees available in white, black, grey and navy blue in S-L for €35 each. Designed by the highly prolific Scottish designer Greig Anderson of Effektive – he’s really “broken the mould” with this little beauty.

“Frosty Treats” a t-shirt for Mortal Kombat fans

Looking back, I can’t believe that my parents let me play the original Mortal Kombat (as referenced in this shirt from Split Reason), I assume they didn’t know how violent it was because I doubt they wanted me seeing a guy rip out another guys spine, even if it was in 8-bit.

Cameraman’s Dream from Sharpshirter

Troundup - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 00:43

I really dig this design from Sharpshirter. I’m sure there’s many the cameraman who would prefer a situation such as this one (although that might be a somewhat shortsighted view given the larger implications of not having a head).

The idea is cool, and the design came off quite well, so bravo to Sharpshirter.

You can pick it up for $22.00 at their store. They also print their designs on American Apparel blanks.

Digging That Mathiole

Buy Tees - Sat, 09/04/2010 - 08:43

Mathiole aka Matheus Lopes Castro has done it yet again and won himself another place of pride at Threadless.com with his latest and rather beautiful t-shirt titled Mucha Lucha. Which is no surprise to those who know of his work, he’s currently has 20 designs in print at Threadless.com which is rather phenomenal in itself. What’s even more impressive is his scope for ideas and styles, many of his tees vary wildly from each other, and for those not in the know it’s not always to tell who the artist behind the design is, perhaps a sign of supreme artistic confidence, but definitely a great habit creatively. If you want to delve into the world of Mathiole I’d recommend his Flickr page which is jam packed with beautiful illustrations. Anyway here’s that latest winning t-shirt design…

Mucha Lucha Tee

Now come on, you have to admit it, this is bloody beautiful! Matheus has taken his inspiration from the work of Alphonse Mucha – a celebrated Czech Art Nouveau painter who became famous for his highly stylized, immensely recognisable illustrations and posters. He spent most of his life based in Paris, and the exposure he received from a series of World’s Fairs meant he was able to showcase his talent for architecture and sculpture too. Mathiole has captured Mucha’s style perfectly in this tee, it’s, dare I say it, almost too good to just wear. This guy should be getting commissions for vast scale murals as far as I am concerned, and yes I mean murals, real murals, made from ceramic tiles. Anyone need any Art Nouveau architecture restoring? This would be the guy to talk to I guess. Now here’s the best twist of all, Mathiole’s mashed things up a little with a hilarious reference to Mexican masked wrestling too! Here you are, seeing as it’s Saturday let’s have a cartoon :D

So there you are, art historical references, retro kitsch culture, and a totally blinding piece of design – get a slice of mondo exuberance in the form of a Mucha Lucha tee for $18 in S-2XL for guys and girls here. Hoodies available too!

Whilst I’m at it, paw over these beauties from the hand of the master tee maker that is Mathiole…

Ecstasy Tee ($19 at design by Humans)

Butterfly Effect Tee ($30 at Imaginary Foundation)

E.x.ecutioner Tee (Sold Out)

Yep I know it’s sold out but I had to include it, this is one of my faves by Mathiole. If you dig this guy’s art check out all these links:

Happy Labor Day weekend, here’s how you can connect with HYA

Hide Your Arms - Fri, 09/03/2010 - 23:00

I thought that after writing a mammoth 48 posts this week I would take the weekend off, especially as all of you American folks will be out in the sunshine tending to grills or recovering from Big Earl, and presumably won’t be chained to your computers. I might still do some work on other super-secret projects that aren’t yet ready to be talked about, but otherwise I intend to just have a fun weekend, as you should too if possible. Writing so many posts is something of a strain, but at the same time it also offers me a bit of freedom that I’m enjoying, with that many posts being written they feel a lot more off the cuff, and in a way more fun to write, but if you guys think it’s all a bit too much let me know and I might start putting some posts together (like coupon codes and that kind of thing).

I thought this post would also serve as a good way to remind you about ways you can connect with Hide Your Arms:

Twitter: You can follow me on Twitter (@hideyourarms) where every HYA post gets auto-tweeted when it goes live on the site, I talk about t-shirts, tweet deals and coupon codes that sometimes don’t find their way to the main site, moan about the price of Apple peripherals, and ponder whether someone is trying to break into my house.

Facebook: If you’re on Facebook, may I suggest you ‘like’ the HYA Fan Page? Unlike my Twitter stream, I don’t share too much on there, just major articles like the typography list, site news, and I ask for advice and feedback about what you guys want to see on the site. Clothing companies are also encouraged to post themselves and their deals on the fan page, as it does get a decent amount of traffic, and I might take posts on the Facebook page and put them onto here.

RSS: There is also the RSS feed available to those of you that do that kind of thing (and surely have thousands of feed items they need to read like I do).

E-mail Subscription: A week or so ago I added the ability to read HYA via daily e-mail digests that go out around 6pm EST. They are e-mails that have everything the RSS readers will receive, except wrapped up into one neat package. The problem with them is that sometimes you might get an e-mail that has a deal in it that has expired, but unfortunately that is just a risk you’re going to have to take, and generally this won’t happen very often.

Last little admin note, I still have an advertising spot or two available on the top banner, and the upper right banner, if you are interested please get in touch using the contact form or Twitter.

Now go have a good time!

Local Celebrity’s Labor Day weekend sale gets worse as time goes on

Hide Your Arms - Fri, 09/03/2010 - 17:00

When people offer me a t-shirt sample, I always say beggars can’t be choosers, and when it comes to coupon codes I have the same ethos, anything is better than nothing, so we should complain that the 25% savings you’ll be getting at Local Celebrity tomorrow will shrink to 10% come Monday. Still, they’re hardly going to do it the other way around (start small and build up), so make your purchases tomorrow morning and enjoy the weekend.

“How to camp at a festival” infographic t-shirt

Hide Your Arms - Fri, 09/03/2010 - 15:00

Isn’t it weird the way that certain types of data representation become popular? I can’t remember what ruled the roost last year (bar graphs? Pie charts?), but infographics are certainly dominant this year. Yes, I realise that inforgraphic is a pretty broad term, but I’m sure you know what I mean.

I mentioned earlier this week that the British festival season was entering it’s tail-end (I always think of Reading/Leeds as the end point, though I’m sure there are still a few going on), that doesn’t stop this from being a cool, funny, and beautifully designed shirt, and it’s not like people who bought it would only wear it at festivals anyway. Only 25 of these were printed, and I get the feeling that they might have been available for a month or two, so they’re already down to size medium only, and this is one of those times when I don’t feel the need to apologise for making you guys miss out because I was only e-mail about this shirt today.

If you aren’t a size medium (or even if you are), you may want to check out their poster about how posters can be used to imrove the appearance of walls, meta-tastic!

Costiness=£13 Buy it at the How To Project
